Networking

As college students, we tend to hear a lot about "networking." We hear that it should be an integral part of our career preparation and can make or break our chances at finding and landing the perfect first job. While we are completely persuaded of the profits of networking, where do we begin? Well, its time to get started.

Start by making a list of people you already happen to know. Seem like a lot of people? It is! The people on this list have their own list of people they know, so just keep in mind that with every person on your list, you have that many more potential contacts. Make a point to keep in touch with old friends or colleagues, you never know when you're going to need them.

Look into joining social networking sites like Facebook or myspace. Sites like LinkedIn can be twice as helpful because they are built specifically for career or business purposes. These social networking sites are excellent for keeping in contact with people you have met.

How do you go about meeting new people? The key is exposure. One tactic for meeting new groups of people is to join an organization. It can be one geared towards your chosen career (like PRSSA!) or even one that focuses on a hobby of yours (like a gardening club). No matter what the organization, as long as you commit yourself to meeting new people, you will automatically expand your network.

Finally, don't forget about your amazing school, Stephens College! This place has a wealth of knowledgeable, diverse, and well-connected women that we have access to. Our alumni connection is a great place to get in touch with so many successful women in so many different career paths. Our teachers are another awesome resource at our disposal, as they have many useful connections as well.

No matter how you choose to start, just get in the game!

Exec Meeting Minutes - 4.2

Ladies!

It seems like I haven't seen any of you in weeks! I'm trusting your spring breaks were lovely. Mine consisted of Consumer Behavior studying and senior project. No, I didn't finish either. HA!

On the subject of PRSSA, we're getting down to our last few weeks of school. Five weeks and, yes, I'm counting. I believe Rikki said we had 39 days left, and my immediate thought was, "is that counting weekends too?" We have some very important things coming up, but also some great opportunities to network and have some fun.

1. We need to do a fundraiser! We discussed some options such as selling candy, holding some sort of auction, etc. We're wanting some better ideas. If you have any, which I know you do, e-mail them to Amanda at prssa@stephens.edu.

2. High Heeled Leader, brought to you by GCS, is TOMORROW! They need our help, so be in the Ballroom at 4:15 Thursday, April 3rd if you can make it. I helped out last year, and the speaker was amazing. It's a good opportunity to hear a good discussion, help PRSSA and meet new people. Hope to see you there!

3. Our next meeting is Wed., April 8th. Don't miss it because Rachel has a very interesting case study involving McDonald's.

4. ELECTIONS ARE APRIL 22nd. I apologize for yelling through capitalized letters, but holding a PRSSA exec board position is a great opportunity. I feel like I've said "great opportunity" about 400 times. Seriously though - planning meetings, meeting new people, organizing fundraisers and all that good stuff is actually fun! Dare I say it looks good on the ol' resume?

E-mail Amanda (prssa@stephens.edu) if you're interested in a position and she can give you more details. Do it. I'm counting on you.

I'll see you at High Heeled Leader or our next meeting!

Exec Meeting Minutes - 2/25

I know it's hard to keep track of everything when the weather is beautiful and the semester is flying by BUT we have some fun activities coming up!

1) Bowl For Kid's Sake is March 14th. Please let Amanda know if you're interested in bowling. Either way, please help us raise money! We need $300 to participate.

2) Our wonderful Whitney is in the process of planning a party for St. Patty's Day. More details to come.

3) If you're interested in serving on PRSSA's executive board next year, we will be having elections April 22nd. Be ready for that, and please talk to us if you have any questions or concerns.

4) The High Heeled Leader event, put on my GCS, is April 2nd. We helped out at this event last year, and it was a lot of fun! E-mail Amanda to let her know if you plan on helping that afternoon/early evening.

That's it for tonight! Mark these events on your calendar. Rachel has an awesome case study for us next week that will be very interesting. See you then!

Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids' Sake

The Bigs of Central Missouri is hosting the Bowl for Kids' Sake again this year. For our service project this semester we will be participating. This is a great organization and the event is so much fun! Last year they served us pizza and ice cream, gave us a T-shirt and we all had a great time bowling for a cause. This year we will be bowling on Saturday, March 14 from 3:00-4:45. Our team has to raise $300 so make sure to ask everyone you know if they would like to donate. Any type of donations are great! Even if you can't bowl please join the team and help support us. I think as long as you are registered you can get a free T-shirt!

So go out there and start asking your friends, family, co-workers, teachers, anyone and lets raise more money than any other team!!

First meeting for spring!!

We tried out new activities during tonight's meeting and it turned out to be a success! If you were unable to attend the meeting tonight, we hope to see you Feb. 4th. Here's the breakdown of tonight.

1) Meeting time
Every other Wednesday at 6 p.m.

2) Dues
$10
Due Feb. 4th

3) Meeting attire
-Business casual for general meetings (jeans with no holes)
-Professional attire (slacks, skirts, etc.) for speakers

4) Current events
To mix up the meetings, it would be great if members brought information on current events within the industry...or anything you find interesting! Discovered a new blog that you love? Read an interesting article? Have a great TV ad stuck in your head? Tell us about it!

5) Big Brothers Big Sisters fundraiser
Bowling for Kid's Sake
We have to raise $300 to participate. If we all raise $20/$30, we're set! The event is March 13-15.

6) Fundraising idea
Valentine's Day is creeping up, and it would be a great opportunity to raise funds. Students could preorder items such as chocolate covered strawberries and pretzels, and we could pass out the goodies the day before V-Day. You may be wondering where we're getting these chocolate covered strawberries and such. We're making them so grab your chef hat!

7) Case studies
Our wonderful vice president, Rachel, put together a couple of case studies. We had an opportunity to discuss the cases, the ethical problems for each case and what we would do. Do you remember the code of ethics? The first starts with an "a"....still can't remember? Ok, it's advocacy, honesty, expertise, independence, loyalty and fairness.

Oh, and thanks to Paulie for summarizing our case since I'm incapable of grasping anything unless it's in my hand. :)

8) Info for future events
We're wanting to put together some general information and a board for future events such as involvement fairs and such. Interested in helping with that? E-mail Amanda at prssa@stephens.edu.

9) Blog
PLEASE, please, please write a blog post, comment on earlier posts, etc. Send your post to prssa@stephens.edu and we'll post it for you!

10) Because I need to end on an even number.
